It is something I detest seeing… A small child who noticeably weighs 4 times more than they should come running out of a fast food restaurant carrying a “Joy Meal” (I dare not use the trademarked name) in one hand, and a 64 ounce soft drink in the other.
A part of me wants to run up to the parents or guardians and shake them into the knowledge of what they are doing to their child.
But, I know that isn’t the answer.
But, what we all can do is put as much information in front of the human population and hopefully, these people will see it.
Today, I want to give you 6 tips on instilling good health and wellness practices in your children.
Good Health And Wellness Practices In Your Children #1: Make Sure That The Entire Family Eats One Meal Together Per Day
This isn’t always easy, but it is possible.
We live in an era when people are running ragged and are seldom home. But if you make it a family rule that everyone eats breakfast or dinner together at the family table, you will see a better sense of the healthiness of a home cooked meal compared to the stuff served at restaurants.
Good Health And Wellness Practices In Your Children #2: Be A Role Model
We hear it over and over… Like Father, like Son or like Mother, like Daughter.
It is true, children copy us. So if you exercise regularly; if you eat properly; if you care about your health, the odds are good that your children will follow in your footsteps.
Good Health And Wellness Practices In Your Children #3: Encourage Outdoor Activities And Sports
While there is a lot that can be learned via iPads and computers, many children are playing games that have no educational value. And this game playing goes on for hours upon hours.
As parents, we need to set some strict rules on the amount of computer time and instead, encourage our children to go outside and play.
And many parents have also found that when they encourage their child to join one school or non-school sport’s activity, the child gets “hooked” and participates in more.
Yes, some of these sports programs can cost money, but keep in mind it is an investment into your child’s health and well being.
Good Health And Wellness Practices In Your Children #4: Washing Hands
Our hands pick up nasty germs from so many places. Anything we touch or handle may carry germs.
- Door handles
- The trash bags
Mom’s and Dad’s, get into a habit of asking your children at random times “Did you wash your hands?”
By doing so, you will create a habit of always washing their hands even when they are grown and gone.
Good Health And Wellness Practices In Your Children #5: Walk Instead Of Using Gasoline
Maybe you need to get something from the store, or maybe your child has an invite to a friend’s birthday party… The tendency is to jump in the car, but why not walk if the place is within a mile or so?
As humans, we depend too much on cars and trucks to take us even short distances.
While you are walking with your child, explain to him or her how walking can help relieve pollution and also help us live healthy lives.
Good Health And Wellness Practices In Your Children #6: Physically Exhausting Chores
There are always chores that need to be done around any home. And every child should have their part in doing those chores.
While they may wimper and whine, do not give in. Have them do some of the physically exhausting things like pulling weeds, mowing grass, taking out the trash, etc. These chores can not only help them maintain a strong and healthy body, it also helps them learn to be responsible adults.
And yes, I do suggest rewarding them for their hard work.
Remember that children are the future of humanity. It is our responsibility to ensure they are prepared to face the world. By instilling good health and wellness practices in your children, they will be able to handle the many situations that they may come up against.
I hope this helps you.
