Bark Your Way To Good Health

dog bark

Photo by Duffy Brook on Unsplash

Most of us love dogs. But can’t they be annoying when they are barking at a bird, squirrel or another dog who is 4 miles away?

Today, I want you to bark your way to good health.

Now get down on all 4’s and let out a healthy….

I’m just joking my friends!

But while you’re down there, do a few push-ups… LOL!

I felt like a play on words today, because you CAN bark your way to good health. But not a canine bark, I am talking about tree bark.

Tree Bark Has Been Used For Centuries As A Diet Staple

You can find many survivalist articles on edible tree bark. We are not talking about that hard outside bark, but what is called the cambium. It is the inner bark that is softer and feeds the tree with water and nutrients.

Nearly any bark can be harvested and eaten.

There are special techniques for harvesting bark and I recommend you check out the links below on how to do so.

What I want to do today is tell you the benefits from 3 different barks you will find in many locations:

  1. Pine bark
  2. Wild cherry bark
  3. and Willow bark

By the time you finish reading this, I bet you will want to go get some bark.

Bark Your Way To Good Health: Pine Bark Benefits

tree bark

Many people have discovered amazing results with pine bark extract. And we can find pines nearly anywhere.

Pine bark extract is known to be a super antioxidant.

Check out these cool benefits:

#1: Lowers Glucose Levels

Diabetes is a huge issue in the world. In a Chinese Medical Research study, diabetic patients were given a branded pine bark extract and the results were phenomenal. It lowered glucose levels dramatically.

#2: Elevates Endurance

Research indicates that pine bark extract provides an increase in endurance performance of trained athletes. It does this by improving the time it takes the body to reach a fatigued state. Additionally, athletes have endured less cramping and muscle pain when using the extract.

#3: Fights Off Infections

The pine bark extract has significant “anti-pseudomonas activity,” making it a potential natural remedy and possible preventive measure for infections.

Bark Your Way To Good Health: Wild Cherry Tree Bark Benefits

Why did George Washington cut down that cherry tree? Was it for the bark?

#1: Respiratory Issues

Wild cherry bark has excellent natural expectorant qualities which means that the bark can help to loosen up phlegm or mucus from the respiratory system. It will help you breathe freely.

#2: Parasites

While science has not proven it, the bark is reputed to be antiviral, antibacterial and anthelmintic in nature meaning that it has the ability to destroy parasitic worms.

Say goodbye to ringworm and other nasty pests.

#3: Digestion Issues

Many mothers have given their children and husbands wild cherry bark tea to relieve diarrhea, bloating, gas and indigestion. It has great astringent properties.

Bark Your Way To Good Health: Willow Bark Benefits

Before I go into the wonderful benefits of the willow bark, I must say that you should use this in moderation. Willow bark has the same properties as aspirin and can cause serious problems if abused.

I suggest consulting a doctor before using.

#1: Prevents Heart Attacks

Doctors have prescribed low doses of aspirin to thin the blood allowing it to travel to the heart easier. As I stated, willow bark extract has the same effects which lowers the risk of heart attacks.

#2: Relieves Headaches

Just like aspirin, willow bark extract reduces the tension that can lead to headaches.

#3: Relieves Lower Back Pain

Willow bark could be a natural remedy for lower back pain, neck, and muscle aches. A 2001 study published in the journal Rheumatology found in a group of nearly 200 people with low back pain, those who received willow bark showed a significant improvement in pain compared to those who received a placebo.

So, are you ready to bark?

Yes, nature provides what we need when we need it.

Let’s hear your thoughts!

Leave all comments and questions below and have a great day!

Nature Heals: 10 Plants That Have Healing Powers

nature healsDo you buy over-the-counter medications for various healing effects? Many of these medications use plants and herbs for the primary ingredient and add various man-made chemicals.

So why add the chemicals?

It is called product creation and means profits for that particular pharmaceutical company. Profits they would not generate if they just used the plant.

Now, I am not a Doctor. I will not tell you to “drop” your medication and run out and pull some leaves off a plant in your garden. But I will tell you 10 plants that have healing powers and you just may want to approach your Doctor and ask he/she if the plant can be used in place of the medicine, or in conjunction with it.

I will tell you the plant and some information about it. You just may be pleasantly surprised.

#1: Aloe Vera

This amazing plant has a plethora of healing properties. It has been used topically to treat:

  • Burns
  • Rashes
  • Cold sores
  • Hair moisturizer
  • and much more

And when a person ingests Aloe Vera, it can boost your immune system, help digestion and has been known to improve diabetes symptoms.

#2: Basil

Basil has been known to help flatulence sufferers.

This great herb can also help aleve a lack of appetite, as well as various cuts and scrapes.

#3: Peppermint

Many over-the-counter medicines have menthol integrated in them.

Well, menthol comes from plants within the peppermint family.

Known to relieve headaches, and cramping just from the odor, you can also drink tea from the leaves to relieve an upset stomach. And some people rub the leaves on their skin to relieve rashes and other skin issues.

#4: Alfalfa

Don’t farmers feed alfalfa to their cows?

Yes, and that is why you should ingest it too!

Alfalfa is super rich in minerals and nutrients. Some of the conditions that alfalfa has helped humans:

  • kidney stones
  • urinary infection
  • nausea
  • morning sickness

Alfalfa also provides a boost of energy.

#5: Calendula

It is a flower you can find growing in gardens all over the United States. And you can use these flowers to relieve any throat, mouth or stomach problems. Just steep some flowers in boiling water and rinse your mouth, or make a tea.

Calendula is also known to help heal minor skin wounds just by rubbing the flowers on the wound.

#6: Nettle (Stinging)

It is a plant that many gardeners detest because of the way it creates a burning rash if you get it on your skin.

But with a short boil, the stinging properties go away and you will be eating one of the most nutritious plants on Earth.

The USDA tells us that 1 cup of cooked nettles will supply:

  • Over 2 grams of protein – Very high for a green, leafy plant food
  • Over half of your daily need of calcium
  • and over 1/3rd of the Vitamin A your body requires

So don’t curse those nettles, put on gloves and enjoy!

#7: Cinnamon

Here is another amazing plant. Did you know that the cinnamon you ingest comes from the bark of the Cinnamon tree?

In ancient days, cinnamon was more valuable than gold. It has shown magnificent benefits that include:

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Cancer fighter
  • Antioxidant
  • Immunity boosting
  • And much more…

#8: Lavender

Just whiffing the delicious fragrance from lavender creates a soothing effect like no other. It can also help relieve pain and is an antiseptic.

#9: Rosemary

Using this wonderful herb in cooking and even tea can enhance your memory functions. Scientists are even studying the possibilities of Rosemary helping Alzheimer’s patients.

There is even a potential of cancer treatment. This is an herb you should not leave out of your diet.

#10: Hemp

Now I would not suggest growing this in your yard unless you are in one of the few States where it is legal.

And I am also not speaking here of smoking a joint that puts you in a different state of mind.

You see, experts have found a way to extract the amazing health and pain relief properties from hemp while keeping out the substance that causes euphoria… THC.

I know of a legal hemp product…CBD Oil. Find out more about this oil here.

These are only 10 plants that can heal.

There are many more and I will delve into more in a later post.

But I suggest you use the ones I listed here today and discover all the amazing benefits.

Let’s here your thoughts and questions. You can post them below.

Thanks for stopping in and may your health be great!

What Is The Root Cause Of Disease?

root cause

If we were to put a bunch of doctors and scientists in a large conference room and asked this question, the room could turn into a chaotic debate. For years upon years, these high-minded individuals have been creating theories on the root causes of diseases.

Now, I am not a doctor or a scientist, but as a wellness coach and personal trainer, I do keep abreast of information and education regarding diseases and how to defend ourselves against them.

How do we determine the root cause of disease?

After all, there are a plethora of diseases. How can one single root be the cause of so many diseases?

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Hepatitis
  • and many more

But there is a root cause that can lead to any of these diseases. The root cause is…

Lifestyle Choices

lifestyle choicesIt does really come down to how each and every one of us live our lives. It started before you were even born with the lifestyle choices of your parents.

How your parents treated their bodies… how they ate, exercised, and the conditions they lived in can directly effect your abilities to defend against diseases.

Since we have no control over the lifestyle choices of our parents, it is important that once we reach an age of accountability, we take a close look at our lifestyle choices to determine if they could cause major medical issues in the future.

Intervention For Your Health

In my opinion, it is the responsibility of each of us who know the truth to gently and professionally intervene when we see our friends, family and even strangers living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Intervention can be in the form of:

  • Nutritional counseling
  • Physical training
  • Stress management
  • Etc…

But, intervention must be form someone who consistently lives the lifestyle they are promoting.

After all, it would be like a person who smokes cigarettes telling a person that smokes cigars that it is bad for their health.

So, before intervening in another person’s lifestyle, you should first review your own.

So essentially, diseases are formed from improper lifestyle choices. But some of those choices are impossible to completely change.

toxinsI speak of being in positions of toxic intake.

  • Pollution
  • Employment where others are sickly
  • Toxins in water and food
  • Etc…

Some experts believe the underlying root of disease are germs. While germs are a factor, we will always have them and our bodies were designed to fight off those germs.

But toxic substances like mentioned in the bullet points were not a part of the germ warfare battle. Our bodies were not prepared to fight the man-made toxins we find on Mother Earth.

So, you should try to take every precaution possible to help your body not ingest as many toxins. This can be accomplished by wearing masks, staying clear of highly toxic areas, etc…

It also means be completely aware of the foods and drinks you are ingesting. Read labels and learn what is good for you and what isn’t.

I have great respect for Dr. Axe and I consulted his website to see his thoughts on this important subject.

I found this article, and wanted to add my input. The first paragraph says a lot:

Dr. Tanya Edwards, director of the Center for Integrative Medicine, writes that inflammation is now recognized as the “underlying basis of a significant number of diseases.”

Had you ever considered that inflammation is the cause of disease?

I was always of the opinion that inflammation was a symptom of the disease.

But that article points out some interesting information.

Our bodies were designed to fight off harmful bacteria and germs. This is done using inflammation. So, inflammation can be a good thing. It let’s our brain know that we must give certain areas of our bodies the attention it desperately needs.

So how does inflammation become a cause of disease?

The body and the inflammation feature of it were designed to withstand just a “certain” amount of toxins.

Humankind has overdone it!

The foods we eat, liquids we drink, air we breathe and company we keep are taking our toxin levels to astronomical levels.

Our immune systems go into overdrive and inflammation is released to defend against everything coming in. But, what happens is what they call in the military, “friendly fire.”

Inflammation takes over when the area is actually healthy. It causes cellular breakdown and the inflammation can actually allow entrance of a disease.

While there is no actual evidence yet, it is guaranteed that scientists are looking at the similarities to an overactive immune system and cancer.

The Positive Side

I did not start this post with the intent of it sounding like a lose/lose situation.

There is a way to win this battle!

It all comes back to lifestyle… Follow these tips, and you will win…

  • Eat anti-inflammatory foods like Acai, Nuts and Seeds, and green foods.
  • Stay clear of processed and fast foods.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Get proper sleep.

And, I should add… You need support!

The Flu And You

You can fight off the flu with your diet

While many people are running around getting flu shots, I am of the firm belief that our bodies were designed to fight the flu naturally. But that requires us to treat our bodies responsibly so that it will fight off flu.

It all comes down to our diets

If you are defending against possible flu or if you have already caught that nasty bug, I have a variety of tips that all leads to what you are ingesting.

Do daily saline flushes

Keeping your mucous membranes moist will protect from microbes that can lead to flu. I recommend that you do saline flushes twice per day. You can get saline packets at many stores that you can carry with you. Just carry these and the small plastic bottles and flush with the mild solution to keep flu at bay.

Stay hydrated

Winter is the time of year that many people get dehydrated easily. It is important that you consistently ingest fluids. Some tips are:

  • Always carry and drink filtered water
  • Drink herbal teas – ginger is my favorite
  • Make and store soups and broths with fresh, organic vegetables. Remember… Grass fed meat.
  • Concentrated fruit juices and sweetened beverages are harmful to your immune system. I suggest avoiding them.

The foods you eat

Sugary items can really hamper your immune system. This includes white flours and refined grains.

In every meal, make sure you are getting protein. Protein helps build your immune system. Make sure your animal protein is organic as well as your plant based proteins. Keep a supply of nuts and seeds with you to snack on to help your protein levels.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables daily. By having a wide supply of fruits and vegetables, you will be getting all the antioxidants they supply that can kill off those bugs that lead to flu.

Also, add those spices known for their healing properties to your meals:

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Tumeric
  • Oregano
  • Etc…

Supplements you may want to take

There are a wide range of supplements that can help you defend or battle against the flu.

I recommend that you take a high quality multivitamin and multimineral.

Experts have discovered that people who are deficient in Vitamin D are highly susceptible to the flu. So it is recommended that you take a Vitamin D3 supplement.

Vitamin C is an absolute. We all should know by now that Vitamin C helps fight off many viruses.

I also recommend that you take high quality probiotics. They can help build your immune system.

Also, you should look for various supplements that contain antiviral herbs.

  • echinacea
  • golden seal
  • elderberry
  • green tea extract
  • etc…

There are several products I would highly recommend from the company I am affiliated with:

Get proper sleep

To ward off the flu. It is important that you get proper sleep. Try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Sleep helps restore our bodies.

Also, don’t neglect exercise. Many people put off exercising during winter, but it is important that you keep your body fit. If the weather is bad, find exercises you can do inside.

If you need some help and encouragement, feel free to contact me and we can set up a winter exercise plan for you.

I hope this post helps you keep that flu away. It is much better to let your body defend itself naturally than to use man made chemicals. But, I am not a physician, so be sure and consult your doctor in circumstances that you are questioning.

Thank you.

Detox In A Healthy Way

healthy detox

Photo by Scott Rodgerson on Unsplash

With winter upon us, we find many people with colds and flu. It feels like there are germs everywhere and you just feel like you need to rid your body of the toxins inhabiting it.

Detoxing your body is a great way to clean your system from all the junk that is entering from breathing, eating and just entering your pores as you live life.

But, there are many detox methods that are actually harming more than helping.

We must always remember that there are uninformed people who can unknowingly mislead you, and there are also those who will mislead just to make money in an evil way.

As I have said in the past, I subscribe to the Paleohacks newsletter and Aimee McNew wrote an excellent article on bad detox programs.

I felt I should dive into the same subject because I know many of my readers are facing similar choices.

By the way, if you would like to subscribe to the Paleohacks newsletter, just visit the website at and sign up.

Do NOT Use These Detox Methods

Vegan Detox

Our bodies require protein and unless you are expertly trained, many vegan diets are not attaining the protein their bodies need on a consistent basis. Many of the vegan diets go after plant proteins and they are not as effective as animal based protein.

There has been a big push to go vegan to clean your body, but you are actually creating more stress on your system by doing so. And during these times of high susceptibility to colds and flu, the last thing you need is your body being stressed.

Smoothie Detox

There has been a manipulative system going around where people are put on full time smoothie or shake programs. This is very dangerous.

It is one thing to skip one meal and use a meal replacement shake or smoothie, but if you are skipping every meal and using shakes or smoothies, it is similar to driving the wrong way on a one-way street; you WILL crash!

With fruit smoothies, you are filling up with natural sugars. Without other food based nutrients, you are endangering your health. And for weight loss shakes, there are many that do work, but they must be used sparingly. There are others that have ingredients that I would not feed to my pet. Be sure and read the ingredients before you purchase them.

Keep in mind that just like the vegan detox, by using this smoothie method, you are creating unneeded stress on your body.

Detox The Right Way

The system does not have to be difficult.

The key is following a diet that keeps the carbs low, the fats high and supplies all the vitamins and minerals your body requires on a daily basis/

If you think about it, these other methods are considered shortcuts, and they do not supply all the nutrients your body needs. You may notice immediate weight loss, but you will experience problems in the long run, and many of them could become serious.

How I can, and will help

I have helped many other people create diet plans that are health friendly, they detox the body and supply needed nutrients.

I can help you develop a complete plan not only just to detox, but to manage your lifestyle in a complete fashion so you will look, feel and most importantly, be HEALTHY.
