Sumac is a spice used in many Mediterranean dishes. It has an extremely high antioxidant level. Get sumac and sprinkle some on your salads. It also is a great substitute for salt.

Super food #2 – Moringa

The Moringa leaves and seeds are full of powerful nutrients. It is a favorite health food in Pakistan, Afghanistan and is loved in the Philippines. Just add to salads or even smoothies.

Super food #3 – Organic Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein and have very few calories. But make sure the chickens giving the eggs are not fed improper diets. They should be on a fruit and veggie diet with no hormones.

Super food #4 – Raw Cacao

The raw dark chocolate is full of antioxidants and energy providing nutrients. I love blending it with coconut milk.

Detox In A Healthy Way

healthy detox

With winter upon us, we find many people with colds and flu. It feels like there are germs everywhere and you just feel like you need to rid your body of the toxins inhabiting it.

Great!

Detoxing your body is a great way to clean your system from all the junk that is entering from breathing, eating and just entering your pores as you live life.

But, there are many detox methods that are actually harming more than helping.

We must always remember that there are uninformed people who can unknowingly mislead you, and there are also those who will mislead just to make money in an evil way.

As I have said in the past, I subscribe to the Paleohacks newsletter and Aimee McNew wrote an excellent article on bad detox programs.

I felt I should dive into the same subject because I know many of my readers are facing similar choices.

By the way, if you would like to subscribe to the Paleohacks newsletter, just visit the website at http://www.paleohacks.com/ and sign up.

Do NOT Use These Detox Methods

Vegan Detox

Our bodies require protein and unless you are expertly trained, many vegan diets are not attaining the protein their bodies need on a consistent basis. Many of the vegan diets go after plant proteins and they are not as effective as animal based protein.

There has been a big push to go vegan to clean your body, but you are actually creating more stress on your system by doing so. And during these times of high susceptibility to colds and flu, the last thing you need is your body being stressed.

Smoothie Detox

There has been a manipulative system going around where people are put on full time smoothie or shake programs. This is very dangerous.

It is one thing to skip one meal and use a meal replacement shake or smoothie, but if you are skipping every meal and using shakes or smoothies, it is similar to driving the wrong way on a one-way street; you WILL crash!

With fruit smoothies, you are filling up with natural sugars. Without other food based nutrients, you are endangering your health. And for weight loss shakes, there are many that do work, but they must be used sparingly. There are others that have ingredients that I would not feed to my pet. Be sure and read the ingredients before you purchase them.

Keep in mind that just like the vegan detox, by using this smoothie method, you are creating unneeded stress on your body.

Detox The Right Way

The system does not have to be difficult.

The key is following a diet that keeps the carbs low, the fats high and supplies all the vitamins and minerals your body requires on a daily basis/

If you think about it, these other methods are considered shortcuts, and they do not supply all the nutrients your body needs. You may notice immediate weight loss, but you will experience problems in the long run, and many of them could become serious.

How I can, and will help

I have helped many other people create diet plans that are health friendly, they detox the body and supply needed nutrients.

Bone Broth For Your Health

Wow, it seems to be one of the coldest years we have had in a long time.

What happened to that global warming? (with a giggle)

bone broth

It is the time of year when colds and flu seem to want to prevail, and while many other people are running to get those flu shots that I am paranoid of, I want to share a simple method I have found to help build our immunities.

Not only supporting our immune functions, this method also improves digestion, reduces inflammation and improves our skin’s qualities.

The answer is:

Bone Broth

Bone broth supplies us with protein, multiple minerals, collagen and more.

But I must tell you that being bone choosy is important.

Grass fed

I often tell you about grass fed beef and how much more beneficial it is for our bodies.

It is important that your bones for your bone broth also come from grass fed livestock.

If you are willing to put in the time to make your own bone broth (simmering can take 24 to 60 hours), here is how to do it:

  • Gather bones from grass fed animals. You can use beef, chicken, pork or even fish bones. With fish, we also add the head. The recipe I am providing is for beef bone broth.

  • You need 3 pounds of beef marrow. 1 ½ pounds of meat bones, 3 quarts water, ½ cup apple cider vinegar, sea salt, 2 onions in quarters, 2 carrots halved, 2 celery stalks halved and ¾ cup parsley.

  • Using a crock pot, add the marrow, bones, water, apple cider vinegar and let it sit for approximately 1 hour.

  • Add all the vegetables (not parsley) and bring to a boil.

  • Skim off the scum and toss.

  • Reduce heat to simmer and do so for 24 to 60 hours.

  • At the final, add the parsley for 10 minutes of cooking.

  • Let it cool and strain.

  • Add sea salt to your taste and you can enjoy or store it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Or buy prepared grass fed beef bone broth

If you just do not have the time to prepare your own bone broth, there is a company that sells grass fed, organic bone broth.

I love Paleo Hacks, and with their service, you can get $10 off your first order.

Bone broth for your health

Just the odor of simmering bone broth may bring the neighbors to your door wondering what is cooking.

The benefits are numerous.

It is often used as a staple for children with autism, and has also been quite wonderful for treating people with allergies.

The gelatin seals your digestive system from leakage.

It is a strong defense against colds and flu… Remember Mom giving you chicken soup? It is like chicken soup on steroids.

Bone broth is a strong tool against inflammation.

The calcium content in bone broth is a wonderful promoter of strong and healthy bones, and it also promotes healthy hair, nails and skin.

Final thoughts

I hope I gave you a great idea for a cold season meal.

Bone broth will warm your bones.

I want to thank Dave at Paleo Hacks for inspiring me to write this. Be sure and visit his website here: http://www.paleohacks.com/

Beware! These Foods That Are Considered Healthy May Not Be

foodsShould we call the false food prophets? There is a common system of believing certain foods are good for us, and when we look closely, some of these foods are not truly healthy or beneficial for our bodies.

Some of this comes from marketing tricks. But, before you blame the marketers, realize they have a product to sell. I don’t believe lying is morally right to sell a product, but in a host of these cases, they are not lying, but just not telling you everything. But, it is usually in front of you on the packaging in small print.

Learn to look at what you will ingest before you purchase it. That is why the Food and Drug Administration forces companies to put various information on their packaging.

So without further ado, here are foods you may want to beware of.

Fat Free

We all would like to think that taking the fat from food items will be a healthy move, but by taking all the fat, the company has also taken taste. So how do they adjust the situation? They add sugars…A lot of sugar.

When you look at expert’s statements, saturated fat is actually quite harmless to our bodies, but sugars in excess are extremely dangerous. Read the package and see how much sugar has been added to that fat free item you are buying.

Trail Mix

It seems to be a healthy alternative to a candy bar, but is Trail Mix really that good of an alternative? What often happens with these bags of seemingly dried fruits and nuts is the addition of chocolate chips, a lot of salt and extra sugar.

To be sure, read the ingredients before buying a bag of Trail Mix.

Margarine

A study called the Framingham Heart Study has shown that people who replaced butter with margarine were more likely to die of heart disease. Margarine is loaded with refined oils and numerous chemicals.

My suggestion is to find a grass fed butter, and just use it sparingly. Kerrygold is one brand that is a healthy butter.

Flavored Soy Milk

While soy milk in itself is quite good for you; it has a lot of protein and potassium. The flavor in flavored soy milk defeats the purpose. The flavor gets the distinction because a load of sugars has been added.

Stick with the plain soy milk and you will be fine. Or, if you feel you must have flavoring, you can purchase sugar free flavorings to add to your soy milk. Or, there are sugar free almond milk alternatives too. The key is to read the ingredients.

Frozen Diet Meals

It is easy to throw the word diet on the outside of a container. If you look at the definition, diet is eating anything. “My diet is 2 snickers and a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream.” I believe you see the point.

These frozen diet meals have enough sodium to give an elephant a heart attack. Plus they have enough preservatives that a person can be embalmed alive if they eat too many of them.

Soup In A Can

Soup, if homemade can normally be healthy. But the soup that you use a can opener to see the ingredients also is full of sodium. A little salt is ok, but the amount they put in just 1 can of soup is actually quite unhealthy. As I keep saying: read the ingredients.

Pretzels

They seem like they would be so much healthier than potato chips, especially if you get the no salt variety.

Here is a case where many people have been fooled.

Pretzels have no nutritional value at all. They are made with a substance called white flavor. When the white flavor breaks down in your body, it turns to sugar. So naturally, your blood sugar jumps, and because these little twisted rings have no nutritional value, you are still hungry.

Tea In A Bottle

Here is another case where you need to read the ingredients. Tea in itself is healthy, but when these manufacturers bottle it, they add sugars, sodium and artificial flavors that make these teas a lot less healthy.

Organic Cookies

Organic is another marketing term that is used to trick consumers that don’t read the ingredients. A cookie is a cookie. Organic or not, it still is full of sugar and salt. If you can stop at just 1, you will not harm anything, but can you really stop at just 1?

Fruit Snacks

They have fruit in these gummy pieces, so they must be good for you right? Don’t be fooled! I suggest just eating a real piece of fruit and skipping these sugar loaded and calorie filled pieces of candy.

The Final Word

This is just a short list; there are many more. If you didn’t notice the common factor, allow me to reiterate. Read the ingredients before you buy.

That is the best way, and you can feel healthy because you are eating healthy.
