7 Tips To Help Children Lose Weight

weight loss in children

Photo by Samuel Zeller on Unsplash

Obesity is a major problem in today’s youth. And while we could point fingers at many of the reasons, I find that pointing fingers actually does nothing for solving the problem. After all, we will not shut down the thousands of fast food joints. We are just a feather in the battle against marketing fattening items to youth. And when parents or grandparents assume that a healthy child is a fat child, we have another issue.

I feel that I was put on Earth with a mission to help humans overcome weight challenges. It all starts with education. And some adults are set in their ways… But children… Children are the future. They are future leaders, doctors, scientists, etc…

If these children accept obesity as the norm instead of the exception, the future will turn dark. And when I look at today’s youth, I see amounts of obesity.

I figure that if I give some tips, those of you reading will share. And hopefully this can go viral and will help parents and children realize how obesity is bad. It causes more health problems and ultimately shortens life spans.

Here are 7 tips to help children lose weight.

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #1: Make Slight Changes

By trying to change the diet pattern of children all at once, you are liable to leave them confused and feeling a myriad of emotions. Make small changes… And explain to your child why you are changing. For their good and your good.

But allow them to have those little junk items at times and slowly get rid of them from the home.

When your child can’t find that sugar filled junk item, keep bananas, carrots or other healthy snack items in plain view.

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #2: Make It A Family Affair

Singling one child out can be demeaning. Make proper eating patterns a family affair. Don’t expect an overweight child to sit and watch you or siblings enjoy a plate full of brownies while he/she has nuts and berries.

Nuts and berries for all.

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #3: Cut Out The Processed Foods And Extra Sugars

This is going to entail a little more work for you… But you need to check the ingredients of foods you are buying. Items that say they are healthy because they are low fat are usually full of extra sugars to help them have more flavor. Fruit juices, unless 100% juice, are full of all kinds of processed items that are fattening.

According to Dr Axe, the best bet is to make your own treats, so you know exactly what is in the recipe.

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #4: Use Positive Approaches

How you say it makes a world of difference on whether you will get you child on board.

Instead of, “You need to lose weight,” try “I want to get healthy and take care of my body. I would like it if you helped.”

Instead of, “We need to exercise,” how about, “Let’s go to the park.”?

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #5: Make Sure The Child Is Getting Proper Sleep

There is a direct link between improper sleep and overeating.

This goes for adults and children.

When we don’t sleep properly, we have a tendency to feel hungry, and we will eat whatever is available. But when we get proper sleep…

  • Consistent hours
  • Comfortable mattress
  • Good pillow
  • Low light and noise

We will tend to maintain a healthy weight.

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #6: Eat Family Meals

I believe this may be one of the most important tips. There has been a huge decline in families eating together. And work and school schedules can be a big reason for this. But try to schedule some family meals together because one study showed that children who shared three or more family meals a week were 20% less likely to eat unhealthy foods and 12% less likely to be overweight.

Help Children Lose Weight Tip #7: Encourage Movement

No matter the activity, unless it is extremely dangerous, I suggest encouraging the child to “go for it.” Anything where they are moving their bodies. While I have nothing against iPads, X Boxes and video games, they have slowed down the movement of children.

Encourage extracurricular activities or even odd jobs that require more movement and the weight will come off.

Conclusion

Let’s all get on board bringing the pounds off children. And it starts with the person in the mirror. If we are not doing the proper things…

  • eating right
  • exercising
  • proper sleep
  • etc.

how can we expect children to do so.

That is what my book 50 Million Pounds In America is about. If you have not got a copy yet, order it here.

I hope this post helps you and the children you love… Please share it with others.

Ways To Overcome Sugar Addiction

sugar

It is a serious problem, and many people don’t even realize it is a problem.

Sugar

A huge proportion of the United States, and world population is addicted to what seems to be a harmless substance…sugar.

You may be saying “not me,” thinking that you don’t add sugar to your foods, but what you don’t realize is that a large amount of food items already have sugar added to them.

Do you want to really know if you are addicted to sugar?

You see, experts have discovered that sugar is similar to habit forming drugs such as tobacco and cocaine. Our brains form a dependency and when we take that sugar away, our mind and body will retaliate. We will feel high levels of stress, anxiety, headaches and more.

So I challenge you to just go to every extent to cut anything with sugar out of your diet today. You will soon know if you are addicted… I am sure. And the odds say that you probably have a slight addiction… Slight sugar cravings.

Good Sugar – Bad Sugar

I believe I need to set the record straight. There are natural sugars that are not necessarily bad for you. The sugars in organic fruits are not the same as the processed sugar added to a cup of coffee or the high fructose corn syrup found in many products.

It is those “bad” sugars that need to be taken down.

You see, according to the American Heart Association, men should have a maximum of 150 added sugar calories per day, and women 100. That is approximately 9 teaspoons and 6 teaspoons respectively.

Just so you know, 1 can of Coca Cola carries 140 calories of added sugars.

The dangers of too much sugar intake

It is just known that calories lead to obesity, so the more sugar you take in, the fatter you will get. But there are other terrible consequences too.

  • It is linked to all forms of diabetes
  • Heart disease is another factor

The foods to avoid

a dozen donutsI recommend staying clear of processed food. Just read the ingredients. Always keep in mind that the higher in the ingredient list on a store bought item, there is more of that ingredient in the product. Many processed foods have added sugars high on the list.

When you are cooking, find other ways to flavor that recipe. You don’t have to put sugar in.

In order, these items should be a no-no to cut down on your added sugar intake:

  1. Soft drinks
  2. Fruit juices
  3. All candies
  4. Baked goods like cookies and cakes
  5. Canned fruits packed in syrup
  6. Many low fat and diet foods are loaded with sugars
  7. Dried fruits

What are the benefits from taking added sugars out of your diet?

I already mentioned that it can, and will help you lose weight and keep it off when you take sugar from your diet. But there are many other benefits too:

  • You will have more endurance
  • Your energy levels will be higher
  • Your muscles and joints will be stronger
  • And, you mind will focus better

You will probably feel withdrawal effects and you will have cravings

You will have thoughts of a jelly doughnut or even just a small peppermint candy. This is when your willpower will be tested. There are some tricks you can use to overcome these sugar cravings. Scientists have proven these work.

Jog In Place

If you just simply stand up and jog in place for about 1 or 2 minutes, you will increase the serotonin to your brain. Serotonin has been shown to reduce appetite and especially sugars. It is called the happiness hormone.

So just by jogging in place for a few minutes, you can knock a lot of calories off.

Splash Your Face With Cold Water

Studies have shown that when people splash their face and neck with cold water, it stimulates a nerve in our necks called the Vagus Nerve. By doing so, your brain feels a sense of satisfaction and it suppresses the appetite, especially sugar cravings.

Studies were done on overweight people just using this technique. They lost weight and kept it off just with cold water.

Pressure Point Tapping

Our bodies are full of pressure points. Some of these pressure points are linked to our appetite according to Harvard Medical School. There are certain points that you just tap with your finger, and your sugar cravings will be erased. Tap on:

  • Forehead
  • The side of each eye
  • Your chin
  • The eyebrow
  • and your collarbone

Many people have testified how well this pressure point tapping method works.

How Is Your Mitochondria Doing?

mitochondria

I bet there are many people who are saying what Tara? What exactly are you talking about… Mitochondria?

I honestly wish I could see the expressions on your faces.

Let me explain…

What mitochondria is

In technical terms, every living organism has cells. Plants, animals and humans are made up of one to millions of cells. Cells contain DNA and RNA, and they also carry out needed functions for survival of that living organism; this would include metabolism and protein synthesis.

The cells have components which are called organelles. These organelles complete certain tasks. One of those organelles is the mitochondria. Its primary function is the generation of energy. Mitochondria are unlike most organelles in that they have their own set of DNA and genes that encode proteins.

The main function of mitochondria is to metabolize or break down carbohydrates and fatty acids in order to generate energy. When any living organism begins to lose mitochondria, it begins to deteriorate. If you see a tree dying, it has lost most of its mitochondria.

So, the key to a long and fruitful life is to keep and maintain your mitochondria

organs

To paint a picture, I would describe mitochondria like your heart inside of a small cell. Not all cells have mitochondria, but cells within major organs such as:

  • Your brain
  • Your heart
  • Kidneys
  • etc

Do have mitochondria. Muscle cells have mitochondria. Nearly any part of your body which requires energy has cells that have mitochondria.

But as we age and deteriorate, we lose mitochondria. Loss of mitochondria is a major factor in age related diseases and such.

Loss of mitochondria is linked to serious diseases such as cancer, heart disease and more. So essentially, optimizing mitochondrial function can provide the benefits we need to live a long and happy life.

It comes down to feeding our bodies the proper nutrients to allow our mitochondria to work properly. Not to mention, create new mitochondria.

So how can we take care of our mitochondria?

I am a huge fan of Dr. Mercola. In a recent article with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, they get very technical about mitochondria. It can be a “hard read,” but you can see it here. I do want to give some key takeaways on how Dr. Mercola explains how we can help our mitochondrial functions.

Fasting

As I have often said, we want our bodies burning the fat. We want to really reduce carbohydrates, but Dr. Mercola points out that intermittent fasting will force our mitochondria to do their jobs. To build the energy levels, they will burn that fat during fasting periods. It is like giving your mitochondria a good workout.

He also points out that we should avoid late night eating. Our bodies do not burn many calories as we sleep, and the mitochondria will actually create free radicals from the food we eat late at night. So our mitochondria can also work against us if we do not treat them right. The mitochondria can actually create too many free radicals which are linked to where cancer comes from.

Dr. Patrick believes a Ketogenic diet can actually kill cancer cells.

Aging

Aging can be a factor, but proper care of your mitochondria is a key in your biological age versus your perceived age.

We all have met people who look and act far younger than what their birth certificate says, and just the opposite; I have met young people who look and act 10 years older than they really are.

And, we read where people long ago lived much longer years than the average today. Why? Because they maintained healthy mitochondria.

Feed your mitochondria

There are certain nutrients that can give you maximum results in mitochondrial functions. I suggest you consider:

  • A CoQ10 supplement
  • Alpha-lipoic acid
  • L-Carnitine
  • All B vitamins
  • D-ribose
  • Omega 3 Fatty acids
  • Magnesium

And, I must tell you that as an independent representative of RegenaLife (an all organic company dedicated to making the world healthier), we have several products that can help your mitochondrial function immensely. You may want to try:

Just click the link and see if they will be right for you. You can purchase them right there and have them at your mailbox quickly.

Other ways to help your mitochondria

You need proper sleep to have balanced mitochondria. You see, while you are in the deep sleep, the mitochondria are working hard cleaning your brain of cellular waste.

You also need exercise. Be it:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Biking
  • Swimming
  • or any other forms of exercise

you need exercise… Your mitochondria need you to exercise. So schedule exercise and do it. Don’t procrastinate.

Conclusion

So how is your mitochondria doing? If you follow the plan, they will be doing much better.

Thank you and have a wonderful day.

Your Metabolism and Your Weight

Ways to help your body keep the weight down with your metabolism

your metabolismDoctors and scientists debate constantly about weight gain and metabolism. There are some who believe that metabolism has nothing to do with weight, but the majority of experts do believe that metabolism plays a huge part in the weight gain and loss of humans.

While I do not want to debate, I will say that I do believe that metabolism plays a big part in our weight issues. I also believe we can help control our metabolism which will then help us control our weight.

The key to burning excess weight is a faster metabolic rate. There are many simple things we can do to make sure our metabolism is faster. First, let’s talk about why we may have a slower metabolism.

Reasons some people have slower metabolisms

I believe we all know 1, 2 or more people that seem to be able to eat anything and never gain weight. And then, there are those of us who even just look at a chocolate brownie and gain 4 pounds. In chatting with others, we bring up that person and there is a general consensus that they have a high metabolism.

So why do they have a “high metabolism,” and I don’t?

There can be many factors.

  • Genetics. People who have parents with type 2 diabetes have been shown to have slower metabolisms.

  • Aging. It has been proven that as we age, our metabolism does slow down.

  • Diseases. Diseases such as heart disease, dementia, etc… have led to slower metabolisms.

  • Environmental factors. It has also been shown that certain areas of the world tend to speed or slow human metabolism in regards to the environment. If you were to study people who live in colder areas, you will probably find slower metabolisms in a large percentage. This is because they store instead of burn to create body warmth.

But, the biggest factor of all is simply our diets. What we eat and how we eat are one of the top reasons our metabolism may be fast or slow.

Mistakes we make in our diets that could be slowing our metabolism

Some people are misled on how they should eat or drink. They are given bad information and actually slow down their metabolisms by following the bad plans.

These are a few mistakes that can lead to a slower metabolic rate:

  1. Under-eating. Some would-be experts would have you just stop eating for the biggest part. They will tell you to cut out all the calories. What happens is your body reacts by putting your metabolism in slow motion if you go to such drastic measures if you are eating less calories than your body needs to function. Instead of cutting drastically, you need to eat healthy snacks between your 3 daily meals. This will keep your body satisfied, and you will be less inclined to overeat at your meal.

  2. caffeineCaffeine. When you cut the caffeine completely from your diet, your metabolism slows. Some caffeine is good. It puts a boost in your metabolic rate. So go ahead and enjoy a morning cup of coffee.

  3. Drink cold water. Cold water speeds the metabolism. Luke warm water doesn’t. Researchers have shown this through studies. So drink at least 6 glasses of cold water daily.

  4. Protein. You need plenty of protein daily. Protein is a major source of faster metabolic function.

  5. Iron. You need iron intake. Without iron, our metabolism slows. Shellfish, beans and spinach are great iron sources.

Other ways to speed up your metabolism

Dr. Mark Hyman is an expert in the body’s metabolic function. When asked about speeding our metabolisms for healthy weight loss, he suggests several things we need to do.

  • Get good sleep. If we are getting too little sleep, it does slow our metabolism. We need 7 to 8 hours of solid sleep nightly. If we don’t, it hurts our immune system, increases the risk of heart disease and does not allow our bodies to have proper cellular functions.

  • Eat healthy fats…a lot of them. While we don’t want our bodies to be fat, we need to eat a lot of healthy fats. We need to cut out the carbs. This forces our bodies to speed our metabolic rates to burn the fats. So eat fatty fish, nuts, seeds and avocados. These high fat, no carb foods will have your metabolism working faster.

  • Be a colorful eater. Simply put, eat greens, yellows and reds. Colorful fruits and vegetables are a source of great metabolic health.

  • Just say no to flour and sugar. These high carb items may give you a low boost of energy, but in the end, they slow down your metabolism which actually slows down your energy.

  • Keep on moving. Just keep going! Exercise; work in the yard; volunteer. Just keep moving! Your body’s metabolism works at the speed you do.

  • Take energizing supplements. There are many supplements that will boost our metabolism. These include B Vitamins, Omega 3 Fats, Carnitine, CoQ10 and more.

Final Thoughts

If you have any questions about boosting your metabolic rate, just contact me, or post it in the comment section below.

Working together, we can get that metabolism working faster. That way, others will be asking, “How does he/she do it?” And the answer will be:

High Metabolism.
